The initiative has provided over 5 tons of equipment to Haiti over the last four months to allow over 35,000 children living in survivor camps to enjoy sport

The Sport Solidarity for Haiti program has trained 196 educators specialized in the use of sport for social and humanitarian projects that have approximately 6 hours of training daily.

The Sports program is led by the Haitian Olympic Committee in partnership with Peace and Sport, and UNICEF.

The initiative is designed to help Haitian children and teenagers, many of whom are orphans, deal with their trauma by playing sports in a safe, inviting, and well-equipped environment. Two sports in particular that have been identified as having the pedagogical virtues necessary to reach children in these camps are Petit Tennis and Judo. Petit Tennis is similar to tennis but is mobile and easy to set up.

The teaching method associated with this activity is designed to socialize children and help develop their confidence. They will learn to play cooperatively and hopefully in the process educators will be able to assist them in dealing with specific elements associated with the trauma from the earthquake.

Judo is ideal for teaching the values of respecting the opponent, concentration, self-control, discipline, and the importance of mental force over physical fore. Judo’s moral code calls for politeness, respect, sincerity, fraternity, and honor, which are ideal for Haitian youth who are threatened by the lure of delinquency.
