The state of skate: Skateistan in Afghanistan
There are now over 750 skateboarders in Afghanistan, and nearly half of them are girls. How did this even happen?
In a place where the female literacy rate is only 13%, where girls’ access to education, let alone sports, is barely existent. The Skateistan girls are doing it all. Watch this video and learn the incredible story of skateboarding in Afghanistan.
In this video, Skateistan founder Oliver Percovich mentions how his work was premised on the idea of finding Afghan solutions to Afghan problems. What started off as engaging youth and notably girls in sport and play turned into a bridge leading to opportunities in education.
Skateboarding is now the most popular sport among females in Afghanistan and Skateistan now has projects in Cambodia and South Africa.
