This study seeks to assess the extent to which the governance and leadership of the sport for development and peace (SDP) sector is gender equitable.

You are invited to participate in a research project titled "Gender Equity in the Leadership and Governance of the Sport for Development and Peace Sector." As the title suggests, the study aims to develop a better understanding of the extent to which the leadership and governance of the sector is gender equitable and the research findings will be used to inform recommendations for future practice and areas of inquiry. The research is being undertaken by Dr Lucy Piggott at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

The research has two primary aims:

  1. To determine whether the governance and leadership of the SDP sector is gender-balanced
  2. To explore the intersectional gendered experiences and perceptions of senior leaders in SDP organisations

The research hopes to raise awareness of issues relating to gender equity in SDP leadership and governance, and recommendations will be provided on how SDP organisations can work towards gender-equitable governance and leadership.

Gaining a greater understanding of gender equity in SDP governance and leadership is important because gender-balanced leadership teams have been found to provide a range of benefits to how organizations and institutions are led and managed. Target 5.5 of the UN's sustainable development goals is to ensure women's full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic and public life. Therefore, it is important to assess the extent to which SDP organisations are practicing gender equality and championing the empowerment of women and girls at all levels of the organisation.

We invite you to participate in a short online survey on behalf of your organisation. The first part of the survey will ask for basic information on your organisation (e.g. when it was established, sport(s) engaged with, SDGs focused on, annual income) and the second part of the survey will ask for demographic information relating to your organisation’s leadership and governance (i.e. gender representation across the organisation’s board and leadership/management team and within the most powerful positions on these teams). We anticipate that the survey should take no longer than 15 minutes.

Please find the link to complete the survey here: https://nettskjema.no/a/sdp-research. The first page of the survey outlines more information on the project and what your participation will involve. The deadline for responses is Friday, 26 February.
