SwimLanka´s October newsletter has just been released and provides updates on the programmes being run in communities affected by tsunamis. Read  a brief summary about “My Beach Day”, October/ November graduation and coach training or down load the entire newsletter.

“My Beach Day”

During October and November, Terres des hommes and SwimLanka are organising days to help alleviate fears and spread the message that the beach can be a fun and safe place. The events are being held across all SwimLanka locations and are being planned and implemented by the project team along with the community’s youth club and CBO (Community Based Organisation). The days involve plenty of action and fun with games, sport and food.

Poonochimunai was the fist location in Batticaloa district to hold the ‘My Beach day’ event- other locations will continue to run the event throughout November.

October Graduations in Ampara & Batticaloa
Throughout October there were 6 graduations across the two areas.

In Ampara there were in excess of 180 children passing the ‘Confidence-With-Water’ classes. Ampara have now seen the graduation of over 1000 children through Confidence-With-water activities,

Meanwhile Batticaloa saw the graduation of more 300 children this month in 4 different locations throughout the district.

Confidence-In-Open-Water
Later this month coach training for stage two of the Confidence in Open Water programme will get underway in three locations. Once this has been completed, classes will commence for the children. It is intended that the classes will take place in natural locations instead of the fibreglass pools so that children and parents are able to continuously access places to swim.
