Table Tennis Provides the Vehicle to Encourage Lasting Peace

Ama Suraweera (President of Women’s Committee of Table Tennis Association of Sri Lanka) and Dilmini Direckze (an experienced ITTF Course Conductor and advocate of promoting participation in sport), led a Training Camp for young players in Vavuniya from Friday 17th to Sunday 19th July 2009.

The location was of particular significance from a humanitarian viewpoint with Vavuniya having been a centre for ethnic conflict in recent years.

Vavuniya has been consistently the front line town in the war between the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and the Sri Lankan Army.

The project was undertaken in Veerapuram Transit Village in Vavuniya District where 944 girls and 991 boys under the age of 18 attend local schools.

Seventy trained teachers, 27 pre-school teachers and 56 voluntary teachers were there to assist and learn.

The Table Tennis Association of Sri Lanka was responsible for putting together the three day programme and the interest of the children was obvious as they played until they could no longer see the ball because of the fading light...
