Trained community sports volunteers lead young South Africans into the future
With support from the Big Lottery Fund, the IDS managed grant has been utilised by SCORE to promote women’s rights through the integration of life-skills lessons and football training. Since 2008, SCORE has educated over 120 schoolteachers and 380 community sports volunteers to deliver activities to over 11,000 young people aged 13-15 under the Leading The Game (LTG) programme.
Creating a safe environment for females to play
Young community sports volunteers received key training on how to build on the positive benefits of sport such as teamwork and communication to create a safe environment for females to play and bring people together to deliver key health messaging around HIV/AIDS using Kicking AIDS Out! activities. Volunteers underwent 6-8 weeks of training to enhance their leadership and decision making skills and learn about effective communication, planning and task implementation, after which they put theory into practice by organising their own local sports festivals and inter-school activities.
25,000 children participate
By giving girls the opportunity to develop these skills and showcase the impact of their training, they’ve opened the door for other peers in their community to join in sports activities as well as involve the local community in the planning. These successful events brought integrated sport and education activities to a further 25,000 children over the five-year period in three of South Africa’s nine provinces.
