UEFA launch a new initiative in their RESPECT campaign. Football players swapping jerseys has become a symbolic gesture of respect.

Background

It is widely believed that players started swapping jerseys in 1931 after France recorded their first win over England. Delighted by the success, the French players asked the English for their jerseys as a souvenir of the occasion.

It is now common practice throughout the football world and symbolises a mark of respect and acknowledgement for ones opponent.

UEFA's respect campaign
The campaign is a part of UEFA’s social responsibility programme – RESPECT.

RESPECT Diversity – to tackle racism.
RESPECT Inclusion – increasing access for disabled fans.
RESPECT Your Health – promoting health through physical activity.
RESPECT Fan Culture – encouraging intercultural dialogue.
