Ugandan Young Coaches of the Karamoja region have started running social activities and football training for underprivileged kids.

In May 2012, The Football Club Social Alliance completed the first part of the Educational programme in Uganda. Professional football instructors of SV Werder Bremen and Bayer 04 Leverkusen conducted the training sessions of this social programme, which aims to educate 31 Ugandans to become Young Coaches in grassroots football and role models, teaching social and life skills to disadvantaged children.

The Young Coaches selected by Welthungerhilfe; Zachary, James, Mary and Paul come from the Karamoja region, located in the northeast of Uganda. The area is one of the poorest and least developed regions in the world and poverty is subsequently a significant problem. The region suffers from malnutrition, lack of water, high infant mortality, diseases, poor harvests and livestock deaths. The children have limited educational opportunities, leading to a lack of qualifications and unemployment.

In spite of the challenging circumstances Zachary, James, Mary and Paul started to organise grassroots football activities for underprivileged children of the Karamoja region.

Zachary teaches social skills and football techniques
In spite of all adversities Zachary has formed four football groups of 52 children between 6 – 12 years. During several weeks he encouraged the kids to participate. He taught the children social skills as well as football techniques like passing and controlling the ball, until the four groups were ready for a tournament. The finals were held on 3rd June 2012.

James attaches great importance to personal hygiene
After the Young Coach training in Entebbe, James returned to Moroto district and negotiated with Acerer Primary school to use their school yard for activities. Each day, between 15:30 and 16:15 he offers grassroots football coaching to 25 children. James attaches great importance to personal hygiene, too, advising the children about sanitation and cleanliness.

Mary takes great pride in her inclusive training
Mary has started to work with children of her community in the Moroto district. The local primary schools and the youth centre Don Vittorio have supported her, by loaning the necessary equipment. She coaches both, girls and boys in her activities and is happy about the outcome of her efforts to include all children. She held a festival and friendly matches on the 9 June 2012, which were supported by the local community.

Paul has community support
Paul works with 30 children, teaching them football skills as well as personal hygiene education. His work has attracted attention from members of the community, who come to watch his coaching sessions. Paul has been able to extend his training sessions to neighbouring schools. He motivates the children and their enthusiasm and sweet words encourage him to work harder on his programme. Paul recently organised a football festival on the 15 June.
