Local NGO Sports for Action works with UNICEF to bring giant inflatable screens to rural Zambian communities

UNICEF sets up popular public World Cup viewings through the ‘World Cup in my Village’ program.

The World Cup screenings bring communities together so that they can discuss social issues including poverty, education, and health.

Furthermore, outstanding youth are trained in intensive journalism courses and conduct interviews to gain a local perspective on a multitude of social concerns.

As one student describes, “We have been able to learn how to use the recorder, how to interview people and we also learned how to make a good story.”

The journalists interview locals before the matches and produce short radio broadcasts that are then emitted to the community.

Although Zambia has free basic education, academic accessories and transportation have often proven too costly for rural localities.

Education is the only way for young boys and girls to achieve their goals and UNICEF is working diligently to make sure those dreams can become possibilities
