Volunteering in the third sector: A story of personal fundraising
For many, it’s a dream come true to volunteer on a project they’re passionate about. We meet a lot of people from all over the world volunteering in Africa and we’re proud to lead a programme which makes a big impact on both the communities we work with, and the volunteers we select to participate.
However, once you’ve committed to volunteering abroad, how do you raise the funds? And can you avoid putting a dent in your own savings to get involved? We believe it is totally achievable to run an effective personal fundraising campaign which, at the very least, reduces the financial burden on you.
As you’ll read, Will was able to cover almost all his trip expenses, thanks to a big fundraising effort he initiated himself
BPF: Will, when selected by Bhubesi Pride Foundation to travel to Africa and be a part of the coaching team this year, how concerned were you about meeting the cost of the volunteer fee required to participate?
Will: “At first I was quite worried about raising just half of it. However, with the advice and resources given to me by Bhubesi Pride Foundation – as well as various opportunities to fundraise with my rugby club London Scottish – the majority of the money was raised quite quickly. Once friends and family knew what I was doing with the charity in Africa, they were happy to contribute.”
BPF: What did you do to kickstart a fundraising campaign?
Will: “With London Scottish I attended various first team games and collected donations from the crowd, raising about £200 from one match. I also set up a BT MyDonate fundraising page – an excellent, user-friendly tool – to introduce friends and family to the charity. I posted updates on social media and emailed them a link to my fundraising page.”
