Access for Athletes steps in where rehabilitation and health insurance end by providing funding grants for equipment such as sports wheelchairs and resources for training and competition expenses.

Access for Athletes surmounts financial impediments to participation in sports, ensuring that challenged athletes are not left on the sidelines because they can’t afford expensive equipment or training costs. CAF believes participating in sports not only increases challenged athletes' physical fitness and activity levels, but also enhances their confidence and self-esteem.

The online application for 2016 closes at 5:00pm Pacific Time on 4 December 2015. Grant awards will be announced in early April 2016. The grant application for 2017 will open in September 2016.

What can I apply for?
There are three different categories. You are only able to apply for one each year:

  • Coaching/training fees, like a gym membership and coaching fees
  • Competition expenses, like entry fees, flights and lodging for an event
  • Equipment

Can I apply from outside the United States?

Yes! CAF has given grants to dozens of countries, including 29 different countries last year alone. Our only exception is that we cannot ship equipment overseas.

I’m not sure if my disability qualifies. How can I check?
CAF follows the guidelines of the International Paralympic Committee. If you have a physical disability that would qualify you to compete in any Paralympic sport then you’re eligible for a grant from CAF.

How to apply:
To apply for a grant, complete the online application form available on the CAF website.
A complete application includes:

  • A short biography about yourself
  • Long-term and short-term goals (both personal and athletic)
  • How the grant (if awarded) will help you reach your goals
  • Your motto
  • Any volunteer work you have done
  • Other (aside from CAF) grants you have received in the last year
  • 2 references: please include the name, job title and company/organization for each
  • Names and gross income of all household members
  • High resolution photograph of yourself, preferably playing a sport
  • Prosthetist name, company name, address, phone and email (if applying for prosthetic grant)
  • Specific grant request including dollar amount of the item
