YOUth can open doors to all abilities through sport

This publication was envisaged as a response to the many barriers young sports leaders face in promoting participation for all abilities

The council of the European Union encourages members to promote the participation of sport to people of disadvantaged backgrounds, at the same ensuring inclusion through society through sports by introducing them to new social networks and helping them develop new skills.

This publication was envisaged as a response to the many barriers young sports leaders face in promoting participation for all abilities. Constantly facing barriers often leads to feeling discouraged, powerless and pessimistic in regards to having the ability to impact one’s local reality.

As set out in the Laeken Declaration 1, Europe’s young people are central to making a vision of a united Europe, a reality. As proactive thinkers of today, it is vital that young people feel empowered to shape their reality and are engaged to contribute to the decisions that are being made. Sport can enhance the quality of life of young Europeans by

  • Encouraging a healthy lifestyle
  • Enhancing ability and skill development
  • Offering a platform of shared experience
  • Breaking through social isolation
  • Being fun attractive and participative
  • Creating a sense of personal identity and belonging

Sport can serve as a tool for participation in two manners

  • Inclusion in sport
  • Inclusion through sport

The publications includes models for inclusion in sports, the model provides a strategy to access different levels and abilities to be included into sports, and different approaches to inclusions.
