The Community Games in Church Stretton, UK, will engage the community to lead healthier lives.
Event date: 14 July 2017

Church Stretton, UK, will showcase sport and leisure in our community through the local Community Games. The fifth Community Games will take place on 14 July 2018. By coincidence, the fifth International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, launched by UN, also takes place in 2018.

Church Stretton is a small market town in the County of Shropshire (Pop. 4,000). Over 25 sports are active in the community for all ages and genders. Sport is an integral part of local community culture. Celebrating all sports as part of a global movement is a thrilling prospect. The local mayor has been widely quoted speaking about the power of sport in achieving reconciliation.

The Community Games are an opportunity to use the power of sport and leisure to engage people to lead healthier lives. The games are promoted by Church Stretton School (part of the South Shropshire Academy Trust) in partnership with Teme Leisure, Church Stretton. The IDSDP has the same aims on a global scale. A further local/global parallel is United Nations Association Branch in Church Stretton, and the UN: both see sport and development as an integral feature of preparation for achieving global Sustainable Development Goals. 6 SDGs related to ‘Good Health; Education; Gender Equality; Climate Change; Sustainable Communities; Partnerships’ are being helped by sports’ teamwork culture.

Church Stretton School is a seedbed for local sport. The school has a formidable reputation for sporting achievement. An example is its under-16 soccer team, which is current national champions after being awarded the trophy by the English Schools Football Association in 2017. Over 20 local sports are active in competitions. 140 sport and leisure activities advertise contact details in our monthly community magazine purchased by 70% of households. The town council has invested in a new, expanded sports pavilion in the town’s playing fields.

However, it would be a joy to establish contacts with towns and villages in other parts of the world who also regard sport and leisure as a dynamic feature of community development. Any opportunity that could be created to learn from each other by sharing hopes and aspirations appears to be what International Day of Sport for Development and Peace is about. Hopefully, together we can also strengthen prospects of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals at local level through the spirit and development of people through the power of sport.
