S.C.P. Japan is hosting a panel discussion on the role of SDP experts in the field of sport and international development.

Sport for Creating Pathways Japan (S.C.P. Japan) will host an online event to celebrate the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace on 6 April 6. S.C.P. Japan is a nonprofit organization that uses sport to tackle social issues and promote an inclusive society in Japan and abroad. S.C.P. Japan focuses on the following three missions:

  • Explore the potential of sport for empowerment
  • Promote an inclusive society through sport
  • Develop young practitioners who can use sport for social inclusion

While using sport as a tool for social inclusion, we are also changing sport itself to make it more inclusive for everyone. Therefore, we always remind ourselves to be sure that the use of sport has a positive impact. Simultaneously, we eliminate and minimize negative aspects of sports, such as exclusion and harassment.

The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP) is a day to raise awareness of using sport as a tool for development and peace.

In Japan, during the run-up to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, much attention has been paid to the social role of sport. Nowadays, there are some discussions about what it means to use sport as a tool to tackle social issues and how sport can contribute to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

To answer these questions, this event presents three SDP practitioners and Mr. Taku Yamaguchi, a faculty member of the Joint Master's Program in International Development and Peace through Sport, University of Tsukuba. This program is the only program in Japan to study sport for development comprehensively and develop experts in the field of SDP.

We will discuss the role of SDP experts in the field of sport and international development. We also will point out the importance of professional SDP practitioners in both areas to maximize the impact of sport for achieving SDGs.

Through this event, we aim to raise awareness of the importance of professional SDP practitioners, the need to ensure a continued and increased investment in sport and development, and the need for greater roles for sport and development within public policy and government.
