The Centre for Sport and Human Rights is hosting a webinar on the role of athletes as voices of social change and advocates for reforms.

High profile athletes have a long history of taking a stand to spotlight injustice and foster dialogue around issues of inequality and discrimination. As Black Lives Matter demonstrations continue to grow around the world, more athletes are speaking out. Athletes have taken to the streets and are standing together to bring about a global society of inclusion, respect, and equal opportunities for all.

An increasing number of sport organisations are finally making allowance for athletes to express their views and, in some instances, are admitting wrongdoing for not listening to players earlier. In this difficult time of COVID-19 and economic hardship, the world of sport has the unprecedented opportunity to acknowledge the critical roles athletes play, both as voices of social change and as advocates for needed reforms. This is a moment for dialogue on the importance of freedom of expression and how that fundamental human right is responsibly exercised in the world of sport. How should athletes and sports organisations navigate this complex issue? Where could all actors work together to find a new way forward?
