Women, sport and media: For greater coverage of female sport
1.30pm to 4.30pm
Location: CNOSF, Maison du Français, 1 Avenue Pierre de Coubertin, 75013 Paris, FRANCE
This conference is being organised in partnership with the French National Olympic and Sport Committee (CNOSF) with the support of the minister for French sport Henri Sérandour.
The event
The conference will unite the highest institutional decision makers to understand the problem of media coverage of female sport, make known the initiatives already in place to promote this coverage and act, by proposing future elements to reflect on.
The background
Around 37% of European women say that they play sport at least once a week. A rate very near that of men at 43%. Yet, only 7% of sports events shown on television today concern female competitions. Figures which challenge and illustrate the global under-representation given to female sport by the media. If it doesn't explain all the difficulties faced by women in accessing sport, this media deficit makes a strong contribution.
It is for these reason that Sport and Citizenship created a network of European experts in 2010 to examine the question of "media coverage of female sport". Their contributions were brought together in a collective text titled "Women, Sport and Media coverage in Europe: The Directive of Television Without Borders, for greater media coverage of women's sport" which will be distributed during the conference.
This event aims to present the results of this publication and debate the issues around media coverage of female sport.
