About the role

Beyond Sport has an exciting opportunity for an entrepreneurial, results-oriented development professional to join an international non-profit dedicated to supporting the use sport with intention to create effective solutions to the most complex issues of our time. 

The newly created Associate Director of Development will be a part of the senior management team and joins Beyond Sport at a pivotal time in our organizational growth. The successful candidate will have substantial fundraising experience, a talent for building relationships and a proven track record in securing funds from private and family foundations, corporations, trusts and major donors. 

Reporting to the Executive Director (ED) and engaging with a global Board of Directors, the candidate will lead development and execution of a comprehensive fundraising and strategy - providing the necessary vision, leadership, and skills to identify research, cultivate, solicit and steward a pipeline of foundation donors, corporate sponsors and prospects to help Beyond Sport achieve short- and long-term goals for our programs and activities. 

Strategy and planning 

  • Lead the annual fundraising planning process to produce effective strategies to achieve income targets across the range of income streams, with support from ED and key members of staff
  • In cooperation with the ED, support in the development of long-term strategy to achieve agreed long term organizational goals
  • Identify new potential income streams and produce strategies to access these funds

Fundraising  

  • Manage an effective fundraising department that delivers fundraising income, meeting set targets
  • Oversee the management of grant and trust income program as necessary and ensure production of effective, high-quality proposals and reports.
  • Develop and lead on a new individual giving which includes recruitment and development of new donors
  • Lead on development of new, diverse funding streams
  • Lead on Board of Directors’ fundraising strategy, complementing and enhancing current engagement strategy
  • Develop and maintain effective supporter journeys to retain and increase their support
  • Working closely with business development team at sister agency, thinkBeyond, to identify and source additional business for both organizations

 Financial Planning and Budget Management  

  • Support Executive Director in producing cost-effective budgets to achieve action plans 
  • Develop and maintain income and expenditure tracking and evaluation systems
  • Ensure the fundraising department is kept within budget
  • Overseeing contracting and renewals
  • Support finance team and ED to ensure we are working within appropriate financial governance

Senior Management 

The Associate Director of Development is a member of Beyond Sport’s senior management team and as such the post-holder will be expected to play a proactive role in helping to lead the organizations growth, including: 

  • Organizational strategic planning
  • Supporting ED with income and expenditure budget planning and management 
  • Advising members of senior management on the availability of funds and the viability of obtaining funds to support campaign initiatives
  • Attending finance meetings to support ED and report and give advice on fundraising matters
  • Managing the Development Manager

Essential skills and services

  • At least 5 years' experience in developing and leading successful, large scale, multi-channel giving programs, including major gifts, individual giving, capital campaigns and corporate funding
  • Outstanding leadership and team building skills from leading and managing teams to success in the past
  • Goal focused with a proven track record of leading donor development programs and increasing the value of regular giving donor bases
  • Up-to-date knowledge of the trends within global giving from a range of diverse potential funding streams
  • A strong understanding of business and financial planning, budgeting and budget management
  • An existing network of contacts across North American funding landscape - including but not exclusive to: statutory sources, foundations, trusts and major donors
  • Good project management skills, and proven ability to devise and operate to contingency plans where necessary
  • Experience of managing and working in cross-organizational working groups with strong coordination skills
  • Experience of managing agencies and suppliers, and working with specialist consultants, including in product or proposition development for fundraising audiences
  • Excellent communication skills with an open-minded attitude
  • The ability to influence and motivate others and to foster collaboration; to liaise with a wide range of people at all levels and across different cultures, and to act with credibility, tact and diplomacy
  • Ability to work efficiently, quickly and to deadline
  • Verbal and written fluency in English
