Beyond Sport is a global organisation that promotes, supports and celebrates the use of sport to address social issues in communities around the world. We do this through convening, supporting and advising the worlds of sport, business, government, and development on how sport can be used as a tool to achieve both social and business objectives.

Since 2009, Beyond Sport has held major events in London, New York, Chicago, Cape Town, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Glasgow and Johannesburg; provided over $5.5 million worth of funding and support to projects across six continents addressing a range of social issues; commissioned four research projects with leading universities; facilitated groundbreaking action in child protection, girls education, urban communities, sustainability, STEM education and sports role in supporting refugees; and built sustainable sport courts in disadvantaged communities around the world.

Beyond Sport was established by Benchmark Sport International - a suite of brands and businesses that specialise in the development of networks in the business and social sectors. As an entrepreneurial company, Benchmark Sport has developed a reputation for building prestigious sports brands from the ground up and is now responsible for some of the biggest flagship events in sport, business, entertainment and philanthropy.

Summary of the role:

The Communications Manager position is an exciting role for someone who wants to be at the heart of the sport for change sector. The Comms Manager oversees, builds, cultivates, and tends to the expansive Beyond Sport project “community”, which includes thousands of projects and organizations worldwide that are using sport to address key issues across the globe.

Specifically, the role consists of three main responsibilities:

  • Manage all areas in regards to online/digital platforms and networks that engage with Beyond Sport’s media channels
  • Lead on day-to-day Beyond Sport communication activity and support on Beyond Sport events as required
  • Support in tasks for NGO and charity clients that participate in Beyond Sport events and utilize Beyond Sport’s consultancy arm, thinkBeyond


Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Beyond Sport Website

  • Take ownership over the development and management of the Beyond Sport website, including generation and sourcing of relevant content, making improvements to functionality, monitoring performance and ensuring it is up-to-date with accurate event information

Social Media

  • Managing and expanding social media presence across various digital platforms.  
  • Source relevant industry news, share and engage with the Beyond Sport social network
  • Support in the development and delivery of overarching social media strategy, as well as responsibility of event led media campaigns

Publications, Publicity and Media

  • Source, write and produce the Beyond Sport Weekly Bulletin and Team & Leagues Newsletter
  • Write press releases, articles and lead on copy-writing for event related materials
  • Develop relationships with relevant sport development media contacts representatives
  • Increase Beyond Sport's profile across media, and with influencers 

Beyond Sport Events

  • Lead on all campaign strategy and communication to the Beyond Sport
  • Support and manage all aspects of content/programming of Beyond Sport events specifically relating to the NGO sport for development community
  • Support the Beyond Sport team in the creation of required pitch and business development documents
  • Engage with and support Beyond Sport network members, which include former Award shortlisters, Winners, NGO partners
  • Ensure consistency with the use of the Beyond Sport brand across all media and event outlets
  • Responsibility for analysis and publication of partnership, sponsorship, and event feedback
  • Support Directly on other day-to-day activities where required

thinkBeyond (consultancy arm of Beyond Sport)

  • Support on charity and NGO clients, which includes but is not limited to:
  • Managing impact collation and analysis
  • Managing website builds; liaising with design agency
  • Managing implementation of digital comms
  • Instigating research
  • Managing logistics for small events
  • Support senior managers in attaining new clients through research and proposal writing
  • Administration and logistical support, which includes but is not limited to:
  • Assist in managing needs of clients through ad-hoc requests, from gifts to travel to general hospitality and client services
  • Assist in maintaining MD’s diary, travel and accommodation arrangements

Desired Skills & Experiences:

  • Degree in journalism, marketing or communications
  • Experience in written publication and press releases
  • Experience with CSM website, and website design – ideal, but not required
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Good organisational and planning skills
  • The ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines
  • The ability to multitask and work across more than one project at a time
  • Strong IT skills
  • The desire to be a part of the team and ‘muck’ in
  • Good creative skills
  • An interest and understanding of the non-profit/NGO sector and sport development
