World Bicycle Relief is looking for a Global Communications Manager.

Background

Over the past 25 years, the world has witnessed the largest reduction of poverty in human history. Despite this remarkable progress, today, nearly a billion people risk being left behind. A majority are women and girls living in rural areas, far from the nearest paved road, unable to access key poverty reduction resources including education, healthcare, agricultural outreach, and other critical government services. Geography needn’t condemn these communities to poverty. 

Since 2005, World Bicycle Relief has collaborated with thousands of communities to connect hard-working rural women, men, girls, and boys with the services and opportunities they need to thrive. Our Buffalo Bicycles are a powerful tool that support rural economic development, promote gender equality, and foster environmentally sustainable transportation systems. 

World Bicycle Relief is readying to scale, and a key component of our strategic plan is to ignite the conversation around rural transportation, and influence the public and private sectors to prioritize transit as an essential enabler of global development. 

Critical to our success is the creation of a new role, the Global Communications Manager.

The Global Communications Manager builds and implements influential and creative communications strategies that advance the work of World Bicycle Relief, raises our profile as a trusted partner, and influences public and private sector actors to prioritize transportation as a key issue area in global development.

Responsibilities

Influence and Thought Leadership (50%):

  • Collaborate with teams across the organization to craft and implement global communications and thought leadership strategies and plans that attract funding and partnerships to World Bicycle Relief and influence public and private sector actors to prioritize transportation as a key issue area in global development.
  • Represent influence and thought leadership priorities within World Bicycle Relief’s editorial calendar, communications deliverables, messaging, digital channels, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Partner with the Production team to oversee the development of communications and products suited to the audience they seek to influence.
  • Collaborate with the Events and Experiences Manager to plan events or special engagements for international development leaders and practitioners.
  • Provide strategic and subject matter guidance to internal and external stakeholders on outreach plans that are aligned with the influence strategy.

Media and Public Relations (50%):

  • Collaborate with Marketing and Fundraising teams to develop and execute break-through earned media and public relations strategies that elevate our brand, engage potential donors and supporters, and showcase the dynamic model and programs of World Bicycle Relief.
  • Prepare, pitch, and place features, op-eds, web content, and other editorial products to targeted top-tier international media, industry-specific publications and platforms, and regional-US media.  
  • Empower, coach, and enable staff, subject matter experts, and external validators as spokespeople and storytellers to broaden and diversify the voice and impact of World Bicycle Relief.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing, Fundraising, and Program teams on external communications, including web and social media content, impact stories, and print collateral.
  • Manage and partner with external communications firms, consultants, and other vendors.

Education/Minimum Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience and leadership in managing comprehensive strategic communications, media relations, thought leadership, and public affairs to advance an organization’s mission.
  • Experience with policy issues and international development, with confidence to deliver and speak to complex information to a variety of audiences in a credible and dynamic fashion.
  • Ability to implement both vision and strategy across multiple functional areas/departments and programs.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with attention to clarity and details, for a variety of materials and audience, including the promotion of ideas and values rather than programs.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, a collaborative style, and an ability to engage and build consensus within and across internal and external stakeholder groups.
  • Experience in effectively managing budgets and outside firms or freelancers.
  • Comfort working through ambiguity and can operate with little structure, charting your own path.
  • Mission-driven and result-oriented. While you are serious about the work you do, you don’t take yourself too seriously.
