Laureus Sport for Good and the Swedish Postcode Foundation are looking for research proposals to understand the sport for development (S4D) context in Sweden and the role of Swedish S4D organisations in society. Deadline: 20 April

Laureus Sport for Good and the Swedish Postcode Foundation have worked together on several projects since 2017, with a joint desire to support and strengthen the Sport for Development sector in Sweden.

By the end of 2022 we are aiming to achieve the following outcomes:

  • Create opportunities for the Swedish Sport for Development sector to network
  • Increase awareness and understanding of how to align delivery and impact with the SDGs
  • Enhance organisations’ capacities in identified areas
  • Raise awareness and knowledge of sport as a tool for social change
  • Improve organisations’ abilities to deliver impactful programmes and source new funding

We will deliver these results by firstly improving the capacity of organisations to deliver high-impact Sport for Development work in Sweden; and secondly, through raising awareness more widely of the use of sport to address social issues in Sweden.

As part of this work, we are commissioning a research paper to help define Sport for Development in the Swedish context and what role do Swedish Sport for Development organisations play in society. The findings of the research will be used by the recently established Swedish Sport for Development Network to discuss, strategize and support their decisions moving forward.

Tentative research question

The overarching theme should explore the definition of Sport for Development within the context of Sweden. This could include various sub topics such as:

  • The role of Sport for Development organisations in the wider non-profit sector in Sweden
  • Synergies and opportunities of engagement with the sport sector (sport clubs and federations)
  • The role of statutory structures in Sweden interacting with the Sport for Development sector/organisations: analysis where they are, how they see the sector and what recommendations for engagement are
  • Identifying the current barriers and opportunities to growth for Sport for Development organisations in Sweden e.g. funding mechanisms/ governance/ measuring and demonstrating impact*
  • Funding models and government structures: Local vs National (devolution of power/decision making)
  • Stakeholders perception of the role sport can play, and how it complements other types of interventions in the charitable sector in Sweden

*What to measure when we talk about impact of the Sport for Development sector; how to measure; and how to demonstrate impact to advocate, engage with stakeholders and build the profile of organisations in the sector, are common questions raised by our partners involved in this programme. Although answering all these questions is not the scope of this research, we believe they will often surface during the consultation with different stakeholders. As such, we expect researchers to reflect on them in the research and include conclusions that could be useful for organisations in the Sport for development sector in Sweden.

This however may not be an exhaustive list and we encourage proposals to put forward their own suggestions as to how the research might be structured.

Approach and deliverables

  • We would expect a mix of tools to collect quantitative and qualitative data and information from multiple stakeholders
  • It should include direct consultation to Sport for Development organisations in Sweden, sport clubs and federations, institutional funders of sport and / or community work initiatives in Sweden (national/ local governments), private (trusts, foundations, corporates) funders, etc.
  • In depth analysis to offer evidence-based responses to the above research questions, plus other questions suggested by the researchers

The research is intended to serve a navigation tool for the Swedish Sport for development Network and so should include recommendations at two levels:

  • Recommendations to the sport for development network and their future role in the Swedish Sport for Development and non-profit sector
  • Recommendations to Sport for Development organisations, sport federations, sport clubs and funding bodies
