Skateistan is looking for a new Deputy Executive Director to lead the organization on its next phase of growth. Deadline: 6 May 2022.

Annual gross salary 77,000 EUR (salary may be adjusted depending on location)

Skateistan is an award winning international NGO that uses skateboarding and education to empower youth. It works in multiple countries and has a head office in Berlin, Germany.

This role oversees and leads all internal functions at Skateistan. The Deputy Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the organization’s strategy in the following departments: Programs, Projects, Finance, Legal, IT and HR.

The role ensures that projects within these areas are in line with the organization’s strategy and that there is consistency across the organization’s processes and policies, especially within these focus areas. The Deputy Executive Director plays a lead role in overseeing expansion and project management across the organization.

This role provides leadership and support for the Programs, Projects and Finance Directors to ensure their ability to reach goals that contribute to Skateistan’s mission and vision. 

Key responsibilities

  • Leading the organization’s strategic planning process, in collaboration with other staff, as well as compiling the plan
  • Act as organizational project manager, overseeing implementation of the strategic plan, ensuring synergies and overlap are identified, and keeping the whole organization abreast of strategic developments
  • Oversee and support finance, projects, programs, IT and HR functions, providing guidance in order to achieve the organization’s mission
  • Providing a high level review of all external financial reports (to major donors and year-end financial statements) as well as monthly accounts. Developing key financial indicators and providing strategic financial oversight in collaboration with the Finance Director 
  • In collaboration with Executive Director, Finance Director and HR, set annual staff benefits for international staff (salaries, insurance packages, relocation costs, flight stipends etc.)
  • Collaborate with Projects Director to ensure all Skate Schools are meeting set goals and benchmarks in terms of financial budgeting, student enrolment and attendance and employee satisfaction
  • Coordinate and collaborate with international directors to create annual departmental work plans and undertake quarterly follow up meetings
  • Support the Executive Director in governance of Skateistan HQ. In particular, provide support in preparing for quarterly board meetings as well as strategizing for new members. 
  • Oversee consistency and efficiency of the organization’s processes in collaboration with the IT Manager and other teams
  • Provide high level oversight of recruitment in senior positions in Finance, Projects, Programs, IT and HR
  • Act as lead team member at HQ as well as HR representative on the Director team 
  • Provide high level oversight on all legal issues at Skateistan, with support from relevant Directors and Managers, to ensure strong governance, engaging external advisors as necessary 

Skills required

Minimum professional and academic experience

  • Master’s degree in a related area (international development, education, social work, business) or equivalent work experience (see below)

Desired experience

  • 5+ years’ experience in management or director level position, managing multi-function teams and leading strategic planning
  • 9+ year of relevant experience, in the non-profit or social sectors (ideally both in field and head office), preferably in sport for development, education or positive youth development organizations
  • A track record of managing expansion into various regions through different expansion models
  • Experience managing both remote and in person teams
  • Any experience working in one of Skateistan’s locations or nearby regions is an advantage (Afghanistan, Cambodia, South Africa, Jordan, Kenya, Bolivia, Iraq and Lebanon)

  • A passion for Skateistan’s mission
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with people in a multicultural context, with sensitivity and respect for diversity
  • Excellent at big picture planning and strategy
  • Financial and/or budget management experience is advantageous
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, tasks efficiently, with a strong eye for details
  • A strong independent leader as well as team player
  • Should have a strong network in related fields
  • Confident and engaging public speaker
  • Professional command or Native-level English speaker; excellent written and verbal communication. Other languages are considered an asset. 
  • Should enjoy a dynamic and fast moving working environment 
  • Desired: An intermediate level of German 
  • Desired: Background in skateboarding

Other

  • Willing to work flexibly and across various time zones
  • Comfortable traveling occasionally to various locations, including Afghanistan
  • EU citizenship or existing work visa is preferred
