Project Harmony Israel (PHI) is the summer programme of the Max Rayne Hand-in-Hand School in Jerusalem. Hand in Hand is a network of bilingual, integrated schools in Israel. Deadline: 20 April 2019

Each summer, campers and staff from around the world come together to imagine and implement a summer initiative to unite and empower Arab and Jewish youth in the city. The English immersion summer programme serves 100 youth ages eight to 15 in a creative and inclusive integrated environment. The programme is staffed by international volunteers (that’s you!) and local high school students. This year’s summer programme will take place from 23 June - 26 July, including a week-long staff training and the four-week summer camp, from 8:00am - 3:00pm.

About the position

PHI is seeking international staff to lead our specialised programmes in music, art, drama, athletics and English language education. We are open to adding additional specialised programmes. So if you have a talent, passion or ideas that you think could be used as a vehicle for dialogue and empowerment, we want to hear from you.

During the camp day, international staff are responsible for:

  • Preparing for and leading their specialised activities
  • Guiding groups of 10 - 20 youth in engaging, developmentally and culturally appropriate activities
  • Teaching and leading English language activities
  • Supporting local staff in dialogue and team-building facilitation
  • Developing relationships with campers of diverse backgrounds and experiences
  • Other miscellaneous camp activities, including lunch prep, cleaning, field trips and community events

In addition to camp and youth development, we welcome applications from staff who are interested in taking on responsibilities related to:

  • Logistics and programme management
  • Project research and analysis
  • Arabic and Hebrew language facilitation and translation
  • Curriculum development and implementation

After the camp day, staff have the opportunity to participate in:

  • Visits to our partner organisations across Jerusalem
  • Trips to sites in Israel and the West Bank
  • Hebrew and/or Arabic language classes
  • Additional programme research

About you

We are seeking energetic summer staff with experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Engaging with diverse youth
  • Dedication to culturally responsive interfaith and multicultural education
  • Leading activities in one or more of PHI’s specialised programme areas (art, sports, music, theatre)
  • Leading English language learning activities
  • Supporting nonprofit and/or community programming
  • Arabic and/or Hebrew language skills

In addition, we are looking for staff who:

  • Are open to new ideas and experiences
  • Have a sense of humor in challenging situations
  • Are excited to support local leaders in their work
  • Are willing and able to put kids first, before politics or ideology
  • Recognise the inherent challenges, and power dynamics, of cross-cultural work in Jerusalem
  • Are first aid/CPR certified

Applications

To apply, please send a resume and cover letter expressing your skills and background to [email protected] by 20 April 2019. Applications will also be reviewed on a rolling basis. Applicants must be able to commit to the entirety of the summer.

Internships with PHI are unpaid. College credit is available. PHI is unable to provide stipends or transportation to participants. Applicants will receive an info sheet with links to potential external funding sources. If you are interested in staff housing, please let us know as a part of your application.
