UNESCO is looking for a research and data intern to join their sports programme team. Deadline: 20 March.

Within UNESCO’s Sport team, the intern will contribute to the following:

Quality Physical Education (QPE) project:

  • Support the data processing and analysis of the data collected during the QPE global survey and the COVID-19 data top-up survey
  • Assist with the preparations for UNESCO’s Global Status Report on QPE
  • Assist in the development of materials distilling the QPE data for public and private sector audiences
  • Support the follow up to the QPE Young Leaders Focus Group and other youth engagement activities around the QPE data
  • Provide support undertaking desk research, preparing briefings and inputting to data related partnerships

Fit for Life (FfL) flagship initiative:

The intern will support the implementation of the Fit for Life scoping study to map and assess measurement frameworks, datasets, indexes, tools, networks, and stakeholders related to sport (primarily), and including physical education (PE) and physical activity (PA). The intern will:

  • Support the project lead and internal or external partners engaged for any related research or mapping tasks
  • Undertake and support with time-bound research, collation and analysis, desk review, literature review and other related tasks to support the Fit for Life project lead and internal or external partners engaged to conduct the Scoping Study
  • Provide support in the development of a global baseline study on sport policy and practice (to be informed by the conclusions and recommendations of the scoping study), including the identification and analysis of good practice impact studies, and integrating AI, data mining and machine learning techniques
  • Input to the work of the Fit for Life knowledge network, particularly where it overlaps with the scoping study and baseline study
  • Support the development of data-specific partnerships to enhance the efficacy of Fit for Life
  • Support the FfL project team members in the development of FfL concept notes, partnership agreements and related documentation via desk research

The intern shall also assist team members with the drafting of section correspondence, update of key facts and figures, translation of emerging data into insights, and any other task related to the implementation of one of the above-mentioned work streams.

Required criteria:

  • Excellent English (knowledge of French would be an asset)
  • Excellent knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methods and data analysis tools
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, particularly Excel
  • Knowledge of Python and Java would be an asset
  • Familiarity with data visualization programmes such as Tableau and Power BI
  • Excellent research and synthetizing capacities
  • Good organization skills, autonomy & teamwork
  • Detail-oriented
  • Familiarity with and working knowledge of open data sources and repositories is desirable.
