The Centre for Sport, Peace, and Society – implementing partner of the U.S. Department of State Global Sports Mentoring Programme — checks in with delegates around the world. The gallery below takes a look at a handful of the delegates and the work they're doing in sport for inclusion and empowerment.

The Centre for Sport, Peace, and Society has been mentoring leaders from around the world who are using sport for inclusion and empowerment. In 2012, the U.S. Department of State launched the Global Sports Mentoring Programme (GSMP) – an initiative with the primary goal of empowering leaders from local communities around the world to increase access to and opportunities in sports. The GSMP is implemented by the Centre for Sport, Peace, and Society.

The programme works by nomination from U.S. embassies around the world, and the selected then attend a one-week training in Washington D.C., followed by three weeks with a host organisation, designed to develop the capacities of these leaders to address social issues through sports. The nomination process involves identifying a challenge or need that either girls or women, or people with disabilities face in their home country. The culmination of the programme is the development of a detailed action plan to address this need or challenge through sports, which is designed to be implemented following the programme. Delegates return to Washington D.C. to present their action plans, which will be streamed live on the Global Sports Mentoring Programme Facebook page on 6 and 7 May for the current delegates in the programme.

Since its beginning in 2012, the GSMP has trained over 160 delegates hailing from 75 different countries. The GSMP has two branches: Sport for Community, and Empower Women.
