Watch a recording of our webinar on supporting displaced women and girls in and through sport, held on 10 November 2021, held in partnership with UNHCR.

The webinar was held during our Week of Action (8-12 November 2021) themed around supporting displaced women and girls in and through sport. This includes a call for articles – whereby we invited actors working on this topic to share their approaches, learnings, methods and resources (submit your articles by 21 November!).

The webinar saw over 170 participants and we discussed the insights and learnings from the contributions received and sought to further build capacity among practitioners and policymakers on how to increase the participation of displaced women and girls in sport and further their integration, empowerment and social inclusion.

The opening comments were given by Bernadette Castel-Hollingsworth, the Deputy Director of the Department of International Protection at UNHCR. The webinar was moderated by Ummul Choudhury (Co-Founder, Frontline Aid) and Marisa Schlenker (Programme Manager, Yunus Sports Hub). The panellists consisted of policymakers, practitioners, academics and refugee athletes themselves, and included:

  • Rose Lokonyen, Refugee Athlete and Olympian
  • Dr Soolmaz Abooali, Refugee-Scholar-Activist
  • Khalida Popal, Founder and Director of Girl Power
