Was a soccer player, and a leader of the Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA). Mathare is a sprawling slum in Nairobi, and host to some of Kenya's most difficult challenges with urban youth that arise from rampant poverty, including starvation, homelessness, unemployment, HIV/AIDS, and violence, among other problems. MYSA has used sports to provide hope to several of these youth, some of whom are now on athletic and academic scholarships in universities across the world. Mathare United FC, a team formed from youth in these slums, is now one of Kenya's best soccer teams, and contributes a majority of players to the national team, Harambee Stars.
I have has now started a community team in Kenya, Mathare Crusaders FC, based on my own life experiences, as well as the same principles I learned from MYSA. The team will be managed by the Center for Social Rural Development Inc.
