What does it take to write a successful grant proposal in the sport and development sector?

Proposal writing has evolved over time, especially in the non-profit sector. Organisations calling for grants are realising the importance of using the internet to invite sport for development organisations to apply for grants. Good proposals are influenced by various social, political, economic and environmental factors.

It is safe to say that proposals are a culmination of a series of stages in the project life cycle: conception, design, planning and appraisal. Each of these stages needs to have been participatory whereby the target beneficiaries should have been consulted and given decision making power.

From a political point of view, a good proposal is one that is in line with the local, sectoral and national goals of the country where it is implemented. In Kenya, it is important to ensure that the proposal is in line with national goals such as the Vision 2030.

From a social perspective, a good proposal seeks to have a gender mainstreaming strategy. Equal participation of women and men in decision making processes and sharing of resources and benefits is a desirable consideration for an effective proposal.

Economically, a good proposal seeks to understand financial issues which will influence funding of the project. The inflation rate of Kenya and the strength of the currency are important aspects that need to be fully discussed when preparing a proposal. The current exchange rates are fluctuating more than ever.

Proposal writing is not done in isolation; an organisation hoping to secure funds should appreciate the power of functional relationships. A financial accountant is important when preparing a budget, as is the monitoring and evaluation manager who will advise on how to structure the monitoring and evaluation section. The human resource manager will be equally important in preparing the project management section.
