Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC)

This document considers three case studies, presenting sport as a social and cultural process in which social constructions of masculinity and femininity play a key role.

The first case study is that of the Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA) in Kenya and run by the Population Council; the second is the "Sport pour la Paix" project in the Ivory Coast run by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and which was launched in October 2003; and the third is “Ishraq – Safe Spaces to Learn, Play and Grow” in Egypt.

The document includes a section on how to mainstream gender equality in sports projects and programmes, covering all stages of project cycle management including analysis, consultation, planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation. For each stage, it lists key questions to prompt discussion and reflection, together with additional information and suggestions for improving practice.
