Swiss Academy for Development (SAD)

This report summarises the experiences gained and lessons learnt from the project “Sport and Play for Traumatized Children and Youth in Bam, Iran” of the Swiss Academy for Development (SAD). This pilot project was conducted following the devastating earthquake that struck the city of Bam, Iran in the early morning of December 26, 2003.

The project aimed to support the psychosocial rehabilitation process in the homeless camps in the earthquake-affected area of Bam. By means of sport and other game-based activities, children and youth were offered a pastime structure that could serve as a stable social background, help to channel emotions, frustration and aggression, improve mental and physical wellbeing and promote values such as teamwork and fair-play that are the basis for a peaceful environment.

Furthermore, it was planned to combine the sport and play activities with other educational inputs, such as health education (e.g. drug- or HIV/AIDS prevention). The report attempts to indicate the potentials and constraints of using sport and play as tools for the psychosocial rehabilitation of children and youth in a postdisaster situation.
