Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC)

This SDC brochure aims to provide an overview of the main themes in the field of sport for peace and development, to demonstrate the opportunities and limitations by referring to concrete experiences and examples and by outlining the possibilities for the promotion of a global network for sport and development.

The brochure considers the growing political dynamic, particularly within the United Nations, of support for sport for development. It demonstrates that sport now occupies a firm place on the development policy agenda and even sceptics admit that sport and development has considerable potential.

Case studies are presented of projects worldwide in which sport is used to achieve development goals and reference made to theoretical discussion and the global development policy debate taking place involving all actors including governments, international organisations, bilateral development agencies, sports organisations, NGOs, the economy, the media and the scientific community.
