International Paralympic Committee (IPC)

This paper outlines the advancement of health and human rights that are being promoted by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), as well as by many other international organizations that have taken on the cause of promoting the right to health. It addresses recent developments such as the concerted global effort to adopt a new UN Convention with increased focus on disability, health and sport.

In 2002, to bring increased attention to disability rights on a global scale, the United Nations General Assembly established an Ad-Hoc Committee that drafted the International Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights and Dignity of Persons with Disabilities. The paper presents the case of paralympic sport including how participation in sport improves physical and mental health outcomes, how physical activity and organised sport improve the health of populations.

Providing background information that allow us to make the connections and outline the unique case and rationale for Paralympic sport it addresses why individuals with a disability often face larger barriers to achieving good health and the potential of paralympic sport to improve both health and human rights on a global scale.
