The Active Well-being Initiative

A new NGO helping cities to improve residents' lives by promoting sport, physical activity and well-being.

The world's first Global Active Cities will be named by the AWI in 2018. Each of these cities has worked hard to make a significant difference to the lives of residents, by engaging them in regular physical activity and sport. A Global Active City programme is designed to engage people who do not do regular exercise, and who are at risk of developing inactivity-related diseases. Cities form an alliance between organisations from different sectors to write a united local physical activity strategy. The approach is strongly evidence-based, and the alliance works closely with local universities to make sure its projects are effective. The results of the strategy are assessed by independent auditors, before the Global Active City label can be awarded. Sign up to the AWI newsletter to find out more and hear about good practices from active cities.
