The 2012 East Africa Cup is set to be the largest youth sport, community and education event in Africa. Please join us for the official launch party at the Commonwealth Secretariat bar, Quadrant House, Pall Mall on Friday 9 March.

In the Africa Cup of Nations Zambia's Copper Bullets stole the hearts of the neutral football fans; but the East Africa Cup (EAC) is about grassroots football. It celebrates East African organisations using sport to improve their communities throughout the year and brings them together in Moshi, Tanzania for a week of workshops, sport and cultural activities... and, yes, there will be a Zambian team involved.

The event mixes football with first aid classes, and participants from places like South Sudan, Zimbabwe and Uganda travel for days by coach to compete – for most of the young people involved it's their first chance to travel abroad. In a year of high profile sporting events, it's a heart-warming story.

The evening will feature an extract of the Road To Moshi documentary which highlights how community sport has helped build bridges in post conflict Rwanda, given disabled youngsters a chance to shine in Burundi and brought slum children back to school in Kenya (a full length version of the film is available on request).

Afterwards there'll be a short Q and A on this year's EAC and how you can get involved this year, followed by music (provided by Lake of Stars Malawi DJs) and dancing.

There's a chance to try out East African regional food and we've invited a mix of people with an interest in international development, community sport, East Africa and the media - we hope that this will also be a useful informal networking event for people with similar interests.

Please note: to attend this event you must be on the guestlist, so please send all RVSPs to Nick Raistrick at [email protected]
