Closing the gap on mental health
When: 5 October, 15.30 SA time
“It is estimated that 6,566,703 persons need care for common mental disorders and 1,292,991 of those aged 15 years and older need care for severe psychiatric conditions.” - Joe Phaahla, South African Minister of Health. In addition to the Minister's words, in 2019, the University of Cape Towns, Dr. Sumaiya Docrat and Dr. Crick Lund reported that South Africa has a mental health treatment gap of 92%.
On 5 October, Waves for Change will be hosting its annual Learning and Partnerships event titled "Closing the Mental Health Gap!" During this event we will be sharing the evidence that supports our work and explore the ways on how we can continue working more closely and more effectively with local role-players and stakeholders.
Waves for Change is a community-based mental health, non-profit organisation catering to children between 9 and 16 years, using surfing as therapy for youth exposed to repeated trauma across the Eastern and Western Cape, through trained youth mentors.
