Beyond Sport: Director of Programmes
Role summary
The Director of Programmes will have overarching responsibility for Beyond Sport’s global operations and corporate and institutional grant-giving programmes, which support people and organisations that are using sport as a tool for positive social change. They will manage the Programmes team and oversee all aspects of the programmes design and grant-giving process - working with funders, grantees, and strategic partners to do so.
Beyond Sport’s grant giving has programme has expanded exponentially in recent years, with outgoing funding growing 400% in just four years along with the delivery of capacity building initiatives to professional sports teams, leagues, and nonprofits. As we continue our exciting period of growth, the Director of Programmes will help shape and refine systems and processes of grant-giving, programme design and impact measurement, secure new funding, and lead a team of programme specialists across the UK and US.
Responsibilities
Programmes management
- Overarching responsibility for programme operations, including: fund design, grant applications, assessment, due diligence, sign-off, and MEL
- Collaborate with the development team on pitches and meetings with current and prospective donors and in the creation of new partnership concepts, grant proposals, grant reports, and other external facing materials
- Design of programme-specific MEL frameworks ensuring that all programme reporting aligns with organisational theory of change and strategy
- Oversee the relationship with institutional and corporate funders, delivering against all programme KPIs and milestones
- Develop comprehensive suite of capacity-building programmes for grantees
- Liaise with the Executive Director and the Board of Trustees to ensure proper governance of UK and US Foundations and all respective grant programmes
- Collaborate with communications team on storytelling approaches for grants, partners and beneficiaries
- Work with Beyond Sport’s Board of Directors on grant programme sign offs
Team management
- Line-manage and coach relevant programmes staff, proactively sourcing learning and development opportunities
- Develop and manage comprehensive and consistent operational budgets, identifying cost savings where possible
- Lead organisational impact measurement, integrating new opportunities for data collection, collation, and reporting aligned to theory of change and strategy
- Represent Beyond Sport and brand partners in key stakeholder forums and working groups across sport, social impact, and international development
- Support the Executive Director in development of annual budgets, policies, and contracts
- Manage freelance hiring and delivery for any operational roles
Job requirements
- Right to work in the UK
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience working in a charity or foundation with focus on international development and working with grantees internationally
- Expert project and relationship management skills
- Proven results in submitting successful funding proposals to institutional donors, trusts, and brands
- Strong track record of successful management of all reporting requirements associated with grants received from third parties
- Significant experience in conducting due diligence into potential new grantees
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Natural storyteller who proactively identifies opportunities to share newsworthy impact stories
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, with experience in public speaking
- Tremendous attention to detail
- A creative mind and a “think-outside-the-box” attitude

Desirable skills
- Knowledge of the sport and development world and experience in speaking about it to a wider audience
- Experience of submitting successful funding proposals to institutional donors, trusts, and foundations
- Experience in commercial brand partnerships an asset
- Proficiency with Excel
- Knowledge of child safeguarding best practices
- Experience with grant management or application software, specifically Apply by Survey Monkey
- Experience using CRM platforms such as Zoho
- A global mindset with a passion for social impact
