Black Rock Curling is looking for two Program Instructors to run the in person curling sessions, organize volunteers and create a safe and welcoming environment for the attendees and their families. Deadline: October 3.

What is Black Rock Initiative?

The Black Rock Initiative (BRI) is a not-for-profit organization based out of Nova Scotia that began in April 2021. Our founder, Andrew Paris, is a black curler of over 25 years who wants to change the face of Curling. A father and community activist, Andrew came up with a plan to address the gap of diversity and inclusion in the sport and the BRI was born.

Our Mission is to create opportunities for BIPOC youth to learn about and play the sport of Curling. BRI also provides Curling clubs with the support and tools necessary to be a welcoming and inclusive facility.

What will the BRI Curling Program Instructor do?
The Program Instructor will be responsible for running the in person curling sessions, organizing volunteers and creating a safe and welcoming environment for the attendees and their families. They will be provided with the BRI curriculum to run a successful 4 week curling program, using their own experience as well as our organizational beliefs and values.

We are hiring 2 Program Instructors, one for each program we have running this fall in the Halifax region. Those two
programs are:

  • Black Youth Curling Program – Dartmouth Curling Club – Sunday Afternoons (Mid October to Early November 2022)
  • Youth Curling for New Canadians – Mayflower Curling Club – Sunday Mornings (Mid October to Early November 2022)

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 years curling experience
  • Experience working with youth and/or vulnerable populations
  • 19+ years of age
  • Reliable transportation to and from sessions
  • *Asset but not required* First Aid Training
  • *Asset but not required* NCCP Curling Training

Hours and pay:

You will be paid an honourarium at $15/hour, work roughly ~3 hours a week, for a period of 4-5 weeks.

Your 3 hours/week will be 2.5 hours at weekly session 30 minutes before session begins, 1.5hr session, 30 minutes after session and then an additional 30 minutes throughout the week to organize and communicate with volunteers/the BRI organization.
