Sport is set for a 238 million Euros funding boost between 2014 and 2020 under the 'Erasmus for All' programme unveiled by the European Commissioner in charge of sports Androulla Vassiliou.

Sport and Citizenship is delighted that Europe keeps its promises for sport. The commitment to funding was awaited for many years by the sports movement and the stakeholders of European sport. This proposal, which must be subsequently approved by the European Parliament and the Council, marks a milestone in the development of European sport.

Grassroot sports

The Programme will primarily benefit grassroots sport. Up to 34 million Euros per year support will be given by the European Commission to transnational collaborative projects, non-commercial European sporting events of major importance, research and actions promoting good governance in European sport and development of civic actions.

Recognition

The think tank Sport and Citizenship welcomes this decision, "It's a real political and financial recognition for grassroots sport in Europe, said its President Laurent Thieule. It is now necessary to develop innovative projects having a multiplier effect and including the European institutions, the sport movement, the private sector as well as civil society. To avoid scattering the financial resources, it seems appropriate to focus on major educational and civic projects, based on existing European networks."
