Laureus Sport for Good Foundation

This document discusses the potential of the use of sport in intervening with youth gangs and the issue of youth violence. It highlights that while sport is accepted as being positive for youth because it provides positive activities and encourages a healthy lifestyle, sport provides more than that. Sport provides an environment that assists with the development of pro-social values, attitudes and behaviours. Sport has the ability to provide similar experiences and feelings to those experienced by youth engaged in gangs and crime.

The publication provides brief examples of the way in which activities such as boxing, football and rugby have worked with at risk youth. Attached to the publication is a report commissioned by Laureus examining research supporting the assertions regarding the effectiveness of sport in working with youth. The commissioned report concludes with ten principles of practice for using sport in a positive way when providing interventions with youth and youth gangs.
