Disability sports workshop held in Dhaka, Bangladesh by Sports for Hope and Independence (SHI)
The workshop took place on 7 August 2018. Seventy-one students in the Bachelor in Physical Education (B.P.Ed) programme participated in the workshop.
The aim of this workshop was to raise awareness on para-sports. Moreover, these students will work as sports teachers or sports officers in schools, colleges, Upa Zilla Sports office and District Sports Association in the future. If they have knowledge of para-sports, it will easier to maximise participation nationally to identify talented para-athletes.
The workshop covers the following topics:
- Types of disability sports
- History of para-sports
- Recruitment of athletes
- Classification
- Benefits of para-sports for the disabled person
- Coaching techniques
- How to use local resources
- Inclusion through sports
- A case study of two people with spinal cord injuries (one athlete, one non-athlete)
Mr. Joshim Uddin Ahmed, Principal of Government Physical Education College and Founder President of SHI Ms. Sharmin Farhana were present at the opening and certificate giving ceremony. This workshop was funded by Mr. Chowdhury Shahabuddin Ahmed.
The workshop was very successful, and the participants all agreed that they will be able to use their new skills in their communities and the workplace.
