The GIZ Sport for Development Resource Toolkit

Sport has long been used by those working in humanitarian aid, and this has become more prominent since the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were introduced. Sport has the potential to unite and mobilise people towards a common goal, regardless of individual differences – a potential acknowledged by the United Nations in deeming sport an “enabler of development” in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Despite its now-widespread application, sport and development can sometimes be missing explicit strategic approaches for achieving the SDGs through sport. In an answer to this, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) have developed the Sport for Development Resource Toolkit.
BMZ and GIZ are experienced in using the sport for development approach, and they have drawn on their experiences and programmes in various countries around the world to create the comprehensive toolkit. Launched in December 2018, the toolkit offers resources both in theory and practice to help promote the use of sport in development.
The toolkit features:
“The Toolkit is a gateway to ‘Sport for Development.’ You will find information, guidelines, manuals, tools and advice on how to implement projects using the ‘Sport for Development’ approach.”
