Youth Charter calls for greater sport and physical activity diversity in Team GB and Paralympics GB squads for LA 2028.

The Youth Charter, a leading organisation dedicated to inspiring youth and promoting equality in sports, is calling for greater diversity within Team GB and Paralympics GB squads ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“We celebrate the achievements of our Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Athletes,” said Geoff Thompson, former five-times World Karate Champion and Chair of the Youth Charter. “But the Olympic and Paralympic Games are a platform not just for competition, but for showcasing the strength that comes from diversity. We urge the governing bodies to seek out and support athletes from under-represented communities.”

In recent years, the conversation around diversity and inclusion in sports has gained momentum. However, the Youth Charter believes there is still significant work to be done. Its Games Legacy Report summary findings shows that:

  • Only 5% of Paralympics GB Athletes were Non-White, with just 1% in Sports/Disciplines with Very Low Accessibility (Very Difficult to Access). This compares to 15% for Sports/Disciplines with Very High Accessibility (Very Accessible) and 17% of UK Population.
  • Only 2% of Team GB Athletes in Sports/Disciplines with Very Low Accessibility (Very Difficult to Access) were Non-White. This compares to 27% for Sports/Disciplines with Very High Accessibility (Very Accessible), 13% of all Team GB Athletes and 17% of UK Population.

The disaffected and disadvantaged young people from the streets need – and deserve – greater hope and opportunity. As well as benefitting them, this will help to reduce crime and racial tension in our communities. The Youth Charter’s message is simple: all young athletes, regardless of their ethnicity, gender, socio-economic status or disability, should have a fair opportunity to represent their country on the international stage.

The Youth Charter’s message is simple: all young athletes, regardless of their ethnicity, gender, socio-economic status or disability, should have a fair opportunity to represent their country on the international stage.

With this call to action, the Youth Charter is launching a campaign to raise awareness and support for aspiring athletes from diverse backgrounds. By providing mentorship, resources, and training opportunities, these athletes will be better able to reach their full potential.
