The American Football Association of Nigeria which officially operatest as the Nigeria American Football Association (NAFA) is the officially recognized federation for American football in Nigeria, sanctioned by the International Federation of American Football (IFAF). As the sport’s governing body, NAFA is pioneering the growth of American football across the nation through a dynamic blend of grassroots development, strategic partnerships, and national team excellence. At the heart of its mission is the HUDDLE Way mantra: Health, Unity, Diversity, Development, Livelihood, and Entertainment—values that shape every athlete, coach, and program under its banner.
NAFA’s grassroots initiatives are transforming communities and inspiring youth. The Nigeria Secondary School Flag Football League (NSSFFL) introduces thousands of students to the sport in a safe, inclusive format. The Nigeria Collegiate Flag Football League (NCFFL) builds competitive spirit and leadership among university athletes. Meanwhile, the Gridiron Gems program, launched in partnership with Browns Nigeria and the BEMORE Foundation, aims to empower 150,000 Nigerian girls through football, life skills, and leadership training.
To date, NAFA has introduced American Football to over half a million Nigerians, boasting of engaging 15,000 people to actively play the sport through its programs. It has also fielded Nigeria’s first National Team for Flag Football who emerged as continental champions at the first ever Flag Football Continental games.
NAFA’s vision is not just about sport—it’s about transformation. Through mentorship, education, and empowerment, the association is building a future where American football becomes a tool for social change, gender inclusion, and youth development. Whether it’s a young girl finding her voice through Gems, a student discovering teamwork in NSSFFL, or a collegiate athlete dreaming of the NFL, NAFA is creating pathways for every Nigerian to thrive.
With the HUDDLE Way as its compass and a growing network of partners, NAFA is redefining what American football means in Africa. It’s not just a game—it’s a movement. And Nigeria is leading the charge.
