Green Interventions for Sustainable Towns's Biography
GIST Kenya is a youth- and woman-led organization based in Kisumu, committed to empowering young people as changemakers in their communities. We use creative, community-driven approaches such as sports, storytelling, and climate action to address youth exclusion, promote sexual and reproductive health, support mental well-being, and advance environmental sustainability. Through inclusive programs and intergenerational collaboration, we transform awareness into action and create lasting social impact.

In a world where young people are often positioned at the center of policy conversations yet excluded from meaningful decision-making, their role is reduced to that of beneficiaries rather than partners. This systemic marginalization leads to poor health outcomes, harmful behaviors, and a growing gap in intergenerational equity.

At GIST Kenya, we believe that youth are not just the future  they are the now. We recognize young people as powerful thinkers, creators, and changemakers. When equipped with the right skills, knowledge, and platforms, they can lead impactful solutions, advocate for their rights, and shape programs that respond directly to their realities.

Founded in Kisumu County, GIST Kenya is a youth-led and woman-led organization born from intergenerational collaboration between young innovators and adult allies. Together, we envisioned a future of inclusive, sustainable development driven by empowered youth. Our work is grounded in addressing youth exclusion, improving health outcomes, and promoting environmental sustainability for generations to come.

We use creative, culturally grounded approaches from storytelling and indigenous knowledge sharing to sports-for-development models to engage youth meaningfully and drive community transformation. Our flagship Climate Action Through Basketball initiative uses sport as a powerful mobilizer to bring young people together for dialogue, education, and direct action around issues such as climate justice, sexual and reproductive health, and mental well-being.

In these safe, energetic spaces, the court becomes a classroom, the ball a tool for connection, and the game a platform for advocacy. Youth are not only participants but leaders co-creating solutions, inspiring peers, and bridging generational divides.

At GIST Kenya, we are committed to localizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through youth-driven action. Whether it’s organizing clean-up drives linked to tournaments, integrating health services during community events, or building capacity through mentorship and training, our programs are designed to create lasting impact from the grassroots up.

We are more than a youth organization we are a movement for social and environmental justice, driven by the belief that when youth lead, communities thrive.
