This handbook provides ideas for implementing inclusive physical education programs for children with intellectual disabilities.

With a focus on inclusive physical education, this handbook serves as a practical resource to support the holistic development of children with intellectual disabilities through structured play. It has been developed through a combination of secondary research, on-ground fieldwork, and iterative design. The approach integrates globally recognized frameworks—such as the Special Olympics Young Athletes Curriculum, PHE Canada’s Physical Literacy tools, and the Behaviour Assessment Scale by the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disability (NIEPID)—into a hybrid model. This is designed to promote physical, cognitive, and emotional growth, making physical activity both accessible and meaningful for every child.
