United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)

This document summarises the activities of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) using sport, recreation and play. It demonstrates that through sport, recreation and play, children develop social skills and ways of thinking, learn how to deal with emotions, improve their physical abilities, and find out about themselves and their capabilities.

A child’s play forms a solid foundation for a life of learning. The document reports on programmes around the world where UNICEF is now incorporating the power and potential of sport, recreation and play into country programmes.

It outlines the partnerships developed with all sectors and levels of society, from governments to the sports world to civil society in all its diversity, to get girls and boys on to sports fields and playgrounds, and to educate children and their families about the benefits of physical activity.
